CITY swimming sensation Liam Tancock will parade his gold medal through Exeter in an open-top bus, the council has revealed.
The Olympic athlete, who won gold in the men’s 50m backstroke at the FINA world swimming championships, is set to be welcomed back to Exeter with a special event next week.
An open-top Stagecoach bus with the swimming hero on board, will leave Bampfylde Street at noon on Wednesday, August 12.
It will make its way through Summerland Street, Sidwell Street and the High Street before stopping at The Guildhall, where Liam will be met by the Lord Mayor of Exeter Councillor John Winterbottom for a civic reception in his honour.
Cllr Winterbottom said: “It is pleasing to see that the council’s investment in Liam when he was a junior, has been more than repaid by his success in becoming world champion.
“I was on the edge of my seat while cheering him on to win the race and was delighted that he managed to beat his own world record in the process.
“My heartfelt congratulations go out to him on behalf of all residents of his home city and I look forward to welcoming him home next week.”
Liam’s brother, Ryan Tancock, 26, who lives in Crediton, said he hoped Liam could also enjoy a smaller celebration with the family. “I’m sure we’ll sort something out,” he said. “When my parents come back from Rome, perhaps we’ll have a big party, or get our friends together and have a night out in Exeter.”
Ryan said he was proud of his brother’s success. “I kind of knew he was going to do that,” he said.
“I knew what he was capable of. He’s not had the chance to do that race since he last broke the world record.
“It wasn’t guaranteed, but I knew he had it in him.
“It’s a relief that he has the recognition he deserves. There’s nothing like winning the gold medal.”
Kim Stead, from Exeter Swimming Club, said the club was looking forward to seeing Liam when he came home. “Liam’s long association and loyalty to Exeter City Swimming Club and Jon Randall, our head coach are well known in the world of swimming. “
His achievements to date have been an inspiration to our young swimmers. The club is enormously proud of him.
“Liam is not only a supremely talented athlete, but a true ambassador for our county, club and the sport who is proud of his roots.”
Liam’s cousin, former Exeter City player Dean Moxey, who is now playing for Derby County, was delighted when he found out what Liam had achieved.
“I think it’s amazing,” said Dean.
“I got a text message from my mum about it — I didn’t realise it was on the television — and flicked over to the other side straightaway.
“It was certainly a proud day for the whole family.”
However, Dean said he was not surprised at all about his cousin’s success.
“I knew how good Liam was in the 50m backstroke anyway,” he said. “He is one of the best in the world.” |
